Islampur (Bengali: ইসলামপুর) is a city, a municipality and an assembly constituency in Uttar Dinajpur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. [1]

1. Geography

Islampur is located at  / 26.27°N 88.20°E [2] . It has an average elevation of 53 metres (174 feet).

2. Demographics

As of 2001 India census [3] , Islampur had a population of 52,766. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Islampur has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 68%, and female literacy is 57%. In Islampur, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

3. Politics

In the 2006 state assembly elections Md. Faruque of CPI(M) won the Islampur seat defeating Abdul Karim Chowdhury of AITC. But the suddenly death of then MLA Md. Faruque of Islampur Constiuency due to brain attack in 18th Aug,2006 have affected the people a lot. In the bi-election Sayeda Farhat Afroz of CPI(M) has contested and defeated Abdul Karim Chowdhury of AITC in Dec,2006. In 2001, Abdul Karim Chowdhury of AITC defeated Md. Faruque Azam of CPI(M). Abdul Karim Chowdhury representing INC defeated Md. Faruque Azam of CPI(M) in 1996 and 1991. Md. Faruque Azam of CPI(M) defeated Abdul Karim Chowdhury of INC in 1987. Abdul Karim Chowdhury of INC defeated Md. Faruque Azam of CPI(M) in 1982 and Goutam Gupta, Independent in 1977. [4] As per orders of Delimitation Commission, assembly constituency no. 29, Islampur, is composed of Islampur (M) and Agdimti Khanti, Gaisal I, Gaisal II, Gunjaria,Islampur, Matikunda I, Matikunda II, Panditpota I, Panditpota II, Ramganj I and Ramganj II gram panchayats of Islampur community development block. Gobindopur and Kamalagaon Sujali gram panchayats of Islampur community development block is part of Chopra assembly constituency. [5] Islampur assembly constituency was part of Darjeeling (Lok Sabha constituency) till 2006 general elections. [6] From 2009 general elections Islampur assembly constituency is part of Raiganj (Lok Sabha constituency). [7]
